Seahawks 28, Titans 24

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The Seattle Seahawks don't want to worry about what any other team in the NFL is doing.

With each victory, they are closer to making that reality.

Matt Hasselbeck threw three touchdown passes, including a 2-yarder to Darrell Jackson in the fourth quarter, and the Seahawks rallied for a 28-24 victory over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday that clinched a first-round bye for the NFC West champions.

Seattle (12-2) won its 10th straight for the first time in team history and also matched the 1984 squad for most victories in a season.

The Seahawks had a chance to wrap up home-field advantage in the playoffs - another club first - on Sunday night, but NFC North-leading Chicago beat Atlanta in the late game to improve to 10-4.

``Our goal right now is to get the first-round bye,'' Hasselbeck said. ``We got it. Our next goal is to play at home. If Chicago takes care of business, great. If they don't, that's fine too. ... Instead of rooting for teams, it's been nice not to have to worry about teams.''

The Seahawks planned to watch the Atlanta-Chicago game via satellite on their flight home to Seattle on a jet from chairman Paul Allen. Coach Mike Holmgren planned to enjoy this victory before worrying about Saturday's game with Indianapolis.

``This might be the only time I ever root for the Falcons,'' Holmgren said.

Hasselbeck finished with 285 yards as the Seahawks beat the Titans (4-10) for the fifth straight time in their first meeting since 1998.

Shaun Alexander also ran for a touchdown, giving him an NFL-best 24, and the league's best rusher coming into the weekend became only the fifth player in NFL history to rush for 1,600 yards in consecutive seasons. He finished with 26 carries for 172 yards.

``It's great to know I'm going to be in the second round of the playoffs,'' Alexander said. ``This is a new door for us, but it's something we've been preparing for for a long time, so we're really excited.''

The Titans weren't happy with coming up close. They have lost five games by eight points or less this season.

``I'm not going to sit here and say we're four points behind a team that's got the best record in the NFC,'' Titans coach Jeff Fisher said. ``I can tell you this. I'm proud of the fight and proud of everything I got out of our football team.''

The Seahawks had to work a little harder in this game after blowing out Philadelphia and San Francisco the previous two weeks.

Steve McNair, playing perhaps his final game in The Coliseum with a $50 million bonus due in the offseason, chewed up one of the NFL's better defenses by attacking a secondary missing three defensive backs to injury.

He led the Titans to 24 straight points and a 24-14 lead midway through the third quarter. He threw for 310 yards and two touchdowns, and Jarrett Payton also ran for a TD.

The Titans had a chance to pad their lead at the beginning of the fourth quarter, after keeping the drive alive with a fake punt for a 26-yard completion. Facing fourth-and-1 at the Seattle 6, Chris Brown tried to run right and was stopped for a 1-yard loss.

Hasselbeck responded with a 13-play, 93-yard drive that ended when Jackson scored the go-ahead touchdown with 8:59 to go. Jackson was playing and starting for the first time since Seattle started this winning streak on Oct. 2 after missing time with a knee injury.

That left the Titans plenty of time, but McNair threw incomplete on a pass on fourth-and-2 at the Seattle 34.

``Teams like us, who haven't had as many wins, we kind of stumble a little bit to try to make some plays instead of keeping our composure as well,'' Titans tight end Ben Troupe said.

Seattle started the game where it left off after winning by a combined score of 83-3 in the previous two games. The Seahawks outgained Tennessee 195-24 on offense with Alexander rushing for 87 yards on his first eight carries.

Then Tennessee's Antwan Odom sliced through the line and blocked a 36-yard field goal attempt by Josh Brown early in the second. McNair moved the Titans on three straight drives of at least 78 yards that gave them a 21-14 lead early in the third.

Notes: Hasselbeck hasn't been intercepted in six road games this season, a stretch of 177 passing attempts. ... Jackson finished with six catches for 72 yards. ... McNair's second TD pass put him over 3,000 yards passing for the fifth time in his career and fourth in the past five seasons. The quarterback also wished his wife, Mechelle, a happy birthday on the Jumbotron.

Seahawks-Eagles

Seahawks-Eagles

Seahawks 42, Eagles 0

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Mike Holmgren confronted his defense last week. They definitely got the message, making a cross-country trip to Philadelphia for a Monday night game in the snow nothing more than a romp through the Linc.

Using big plays on defense, including interception returns for touchdowns by Andre Dyson and rookie Lofa Tatupu, and smaller ones from their top-ranked offense, the Seattle Seahawks routed the Eagles 42-0.

``I challenged them during the week, our young guys, and they really stepped up,'' Seattle's coach said. ``Tonight, they really had fun. They got to turn those things into touchdowns.

``We gave up a lot of yards to the Giants and San Francisco, and I feel we're better than that. We weren't giving up a lot of points, but I thought we hit a bit of a leveling and I kind of pounded them a bit. If they played tonight like that because they are mad at me, that's fine.''

Of course, these aren't the same Eagles who made the last four NFC championship games. Philadelphia (5-7) has been torn apart by injuries and the Terrell Owens affair and played its worst game since becoming an NFC force in 2001.

Certainly a better fight was expected. Yet the Seahawks (10-2) dominated from the outset, winning their eighth straight game, tying a team record set in 1984. They gained only 194 yards overall - the Seahawks were averaging 386 - but didn't need to do much after taking a 35-0 halftime lead.

``I've never been ahead like that against a good football team,'' Holmgren said. ``It was kind of new territory.''

Seattle, which got two short touchdowns runs from NFL rushing leader Shaun Alexander, sort of sneaked its way to the top of the conference and barely survived the New York Giants last week. In the Monday night spotlight, though, the NFC West champions filled the scoreboard.

``We just jumped on them and didn't let them breathe,'' said Dyson, who was on crutches and wore a protective boot on his left ankle after spraining it returning Ryan Moats' fumble 25 yards for a touchdown on the first play of the second half.

Dyson was carried off the field by several teammates, but Holmgren said he didn't think it was serious.

``I think we showed a lot of people about this team,'' Alexander added.

It was Philadelphia's worst loss since a 38-0 flop against Seattle to open the 1998 season. Indeed, as Dyson scored on his fumble return, the Linc pretty much emptied out. The majority of fans stayed that long only because the Eagles retired Reggie White's No. 92 at halftime.

The Eagles, who had six turnovers, were shut out for the first time since 2003 when Tampa Bay beat them 17-0 in the first game in the new stadium. It was the Eagles' worst home loss since they were beaten 49-0 by Green Bay in 1962.

``Embarrassing may be a good term for it,'' DE Jevon Kearse said. ``It was embarrassing and everything else bad that goes with it.''

And, they lost running back Brian Westbrook with a sprained foot. He will have an MRI on Tuesday.

It didn't take long for Seattle's powerful offense to begin the scoring. Well, it actually took more than eight minutes on the opening drive, a relentless march featuring four third-down conversions and 16 plays. Matt Hasselbeck, flushed to the right, found Bobby Engram wide open in the end zone for an 11-yard pass after Philadelphia's Jeremiah Trotter and Quintin Mikell collided.

Three plays earlier, Trotter's illegal contact penalty negated Mikell's interception in the end zone.

When the Eagles staged their own productive drive, it ended ignominiously as Mike McMahon stared straight at receiver Greg Lewis. Dyson read the pass perfectly, picked it off and raced 72 yards down the left sideline for a 14-0 lead.

Early in the second quarter, McMahon threw directly to middle linebacker Tatupu, who went 38 yards to make it 21-0. It was the first time in 30 years the Eagles have allowed two interception runbacks for scores in a game, according to Elias Sports Bureau.

``Maybe it was a little reaction, but it wasn't the greatest decision on the QB's part,'' Tatupu said. ``But he has a strong arm and he thought he could force it in there and I just undercut it at the right time.

``It was a great game all around. It just proved we are coming together at a time when we need to come together.''

Alexander got his first TD of the night on a 2-yard run one play after Koy Detmer, in for the inept McMahon, had his pass tipped by the omnipresent Tatupu and picked off by Michael Boulware. He added his league-leading 22nd touchdown of the season with a 1-yarder set up by Hasselbeck's 42-yard pass to D.J. Hackett.

Alexander finished with 49 yards rushing, the first time in more than a year he had fewer than 60 yards. But he didn't play in the second half.

``I was begging to stay in there,'' he said jokingly.

Owens finished his team suspension for conduct detrimental to the franchise. He was deactivated before the game, as he will be for the rest of a season spiraling out of control.

Notes: Seattle holds the NFL record for interception returns for TDs with four against Kansas City on Nov. 4, 1984. ... The Eagles last allowed two interception returns for TDs on Nov. 3, 1975, against the Los Angeles Rams. ... McMahon and Detmer each threw two interceptions, Moats and Detmer lost fumbles.

Seahawks-49ers

Seahawks-49ers

Seahawks 27, 49ers 25

Seattle_seahawks SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Collapses have long been commonplace for the Seattle Seahawks, and this one was shaping up as a shameful classic. They were one pass away from blowing a 15-point lead and going to overtime after failing to stop the backups on one of the NFL's worst teams.

But these Seahawks believe they can change their flop-filled history. And when Ken Dorsey's final pass bounced in the end zone, Seattle changed, all right - into the conference's winningest team.

Shaun Alexander rushed for 115 yards and two touchdowns, and the Seahawks stopped the 49ers' 2-point conversion attempt with 28 seconds left in their sixth straight victory, 27-25 on Sunday.

After the color returned to their faces, the Seahawks (8-2) realized they matched the best start in franchise history, also accomplished in 1999 and 1984 - the last time the Seahawks won a playoff game. The '99 team was a more typical Seattle squad, losing five of its last six in coach Mike Holmgren's first season.

``In the past, we might have let this one slip away, but this is a different team and a different season,'' Holmgren said. ``You have to win a game like this. It was important for us to win a game like this. You go in and everyone is talking about it all week - what a lopsided game it could be - because the players and the coaches are human beings.''

Matt Hasselbeck was 19-of-31 for 233 yards and a TD pass to D.J. Hackett as the league's most prolific offense dominated the first three quarters, racking up 357 yards. But Seattle stalled in the fourth quarter, managing just 16 yards and no first downs while awakening those memories of embarrassing midseason losses.

And with coordinator Ray Rhodes back home in Seattle after his second stroke-like episode this season, the Seahawks' defense nearly blew a victory that put them alone atop the NFC after Carolina's loss to Chicago.

But the defense barely held, the offense still had good numbers - and the Seahawks tried to get used to getting the breaks.

``My brother used to always tell me that when you are really doing good, you start to make things that are great, normal,'' said Alexander, who leads the NFL with 1,229 yards rushing. ``That's what I'm trying to do, and our team is trying to do that, too. We are trying to make winning normal. We are trying to make 100-yard games normal ... because after that, the sky is the limit.''

The 49ers (2-8), whose offense has been terrible all season, staged an improbable rally around Dorsey, who passed for 249 yards in his second start of the season. After snapping a streak of 47 consecutive possessions without a touchdown earlier in the fourth quarter, San Francisco made a last-ditch, 13-play scoring drive.

Dorsey was 6-of-8 for 77 yards in the series, and Jason McAddley went 29 yards on his first reception of the season. Third-string running back Maurice Hicks finished it with a 1-yard dive, stretching over the goal line.

But on the 2-point conversion attempt, Dorsey bounced a tough throw to Johnnie Morton in the back of the end zone. Marquand Manuel recovered the onside kick, and the Seahawks kneeled on their fifth straight victory over San Francisco.

``It's deflating. You can't say anything more,'' Dorsey said. ``We fought so hard to get back. The guys did such a great job fighting to get back, and to fall short like that hurts.''

Brandon Lloyd had seven catches for 119 yards for the 49ers (2-8), who lost for the eighth time in nine games despite their offense's most encouraging performance since the season opener.

San Francisco kept it close throughout, pulling within 27-19 early in the fourth on Lloyd's 22-yard touchdown catch - the Niners' first TD at home in 16 quarters.

``We grew up a lot,'' Lloyd said. ``We're going to measure our progress based on how we play next week (at Tennessee). We're maturing in practice, and it was nice to see it on the field.''

Dorsey was solid and even exciting, going 18-of-29 without an interception after the 49ers' fourth starting quarterback change in six games. Dorsey replaced Cody Pickett, who completed just one pass in last week's loss at Chicago.

Notes: At halftime, the 49ers presented the Hall of Fame ring to Steve Young, the two-time MVP who led them to a championship after the 1994 season. ... Hicks rushed for 83 yards in his first playing time at RB this season in place of injured Kevan Barlow (concussion) and rookie Frank Gore (groin/hip). ... Joe Nedney added four more field goals for the Niners, giving him 14 in the last four games. Josh Brown kicked two for Seattle.
